New Year’s Resolutions

With Christmas on the wind down, I have been seeing many chatting about New Year’s Resolutions and what they are making and some are not making any as they never keep them anyway – so thought I’d write about them and put a little twist on the concept.

First I would like to list the top ten New Year’s Resolutions
1. Spend More Time with Family and Friends
2. Fit in Fitness/Exercise More
3. Tame the Bulge/Lose Weight
4. Quit Smoking
5. Enjoy Life More
6. Quit Drinking
7. Get Out of Debt
8. Learn Something New
9. Help Others
10. Get Organized

Yea, I see you shaking your head as bet most of them have been on your list – now I’m going to ask you – how many years have you wrote down that same list and didn’t follow thru – I know I did for years and years – you know good intentions.

Well, they say with age comes better decisions – well I have to agree because you know after I STOPPED writing them down and being disappointed that I didn’t get them done – and then felt bad the rest of the year. This is NOT a good way to start off a year so I QUIT making New Year’s Resolution.

Want to hear the strange part here – all those things I use to write down and never get done well now they get done. It’s something about that January 1st that you have to have New Year’s Resolutions – well you don’t. I’m here to tell you to NOT make them this year – don’t set yourself up for failure and don’t begin your year that way.

What I want everyone to do is write down your resolutions – but instead of giving yourself that date of when to start – START NOW – get on the net and learn something new – spend more time with your friends and family – etc. You got the picture – START NOW – don’t put it off till New Year Day and by the 7th or the 10th you feel like a failure – this can ruin the rest of the year for you.

There is a song that comes to mind as I’m writing here – the song is by Tim McGraw and it’s Live Like You Were Dying – now I know that is a strange title – but think about it – if you were told tomorrow that you had a year to live  – would that change the way you think about things and make you START NOW on that list. For you that have not heard this song – listen here Live Like You Were Dying

Well, I warned you that I had a little twist for this post – but before you get all bent out of shape over this post – think about it – next year this time – you can look back and thank God that you had an awesome year – try it this year – let’s make 2011 rock – START NOW

  1. Hi there Nancy,
Well when I first started to read all those things, I was about to write in here No way. As like you having read now all of your post. I to know that they would not be done at all.
As you say best not to make them really at all. Yes of course write soe down for your self. Promise your self you are really going to try. But tackle them no more than a couple at a time. That way it is for sure that if you stick with it. You will get most if not all of them done.
Great post as usual there my friend.

    • Thanks Kevan and yes and they don’t have to wait to New Year to get started – when you think of them don’t put things off – Start NOW

  2. Nancy, You are so right, I have made simalar lists in the past and I finally stop writing them down because I never did anything to make them happen. I think you are spot on, if we start now and put it off we will have a head start on making them come true.

    Thanks,

    • I agree Jon – so many use waiting till the New Year to start something when that is going to set you up for failure – start now

  3. Yes Nancy, as we say you hit the nail on its head… love the video powerful song people don’t realize how import-end all of these things really are until some tragedy hits in the family or there friends… it is so much easier to work on these New Years Resolution all year long one day at a time!

    Thanks,

  4. Great advice Nancy. I sometimes think that we just make those resolutions because it was a tradition we learned as kids from our parents. I quit making them years ago. I choose to live each day like it is my last, I think it helps to make better decisions all year.

Around this time of year I think about what I want to happen in the next year. Sometimes the goals can be huge and overwhelming! So I break it down to steps to get there. It’s the old, “How do you eat an elephant?” Well.. One bite at a time of course! Just keep taking those little steps and avoid getting overwhelmed.

  5. Great Post Nancy. I agree if we want to do something don’t wait for a certain date, do it now. We need to treat life as it is very special and as if we are going to leave this world very soon. We certainly take things for granted sometimes. Let’s make today the best day possible and the next…. Thanks Nancy, joyous New Year!

    • Oh I agree Gerry – and yes we do take things and people for granted – thinking that I will do it tomorrow, next week, next month I wish more would do it NOW

  6. HI Nancy,

Wow, love your post. I am one that never wrote resolutions down but always had some that I intended to do and complete and never did. But I am going to plan now and start now on some things like you suggest in doing instead of waiting until after Jan 1. that is a great idea.

    Thanks again,

    • You welcome Susie – I think we all should keep that attitude for this new year and 2011 will be a wonderful year for lot of us

    • You are welcome – and you are right about not being promised tomorrow – I feel a person should live everyday with no regrets of what they should have done

    • Oh I agree – since I have just these as goals it sure has seem to make a different – I know it sound crazy but it’s working for me
